Canterbury Green Apartment Fire

February 8, 2018 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to a fire in Canterbury Green Apartments. First arriving crews found heavy smoke coming from the roof and eaves of the structure. Multiple crews made an aggressive fire attack on all three floors of the apartment building and confined the fire to one half of the building. Multiple units in the building sustained heavy fire, smoke and water damage. FWFD kept crews on scene for an extended period of time working on hot spots throughout the structure. The fire is currently under investigation and there were no injuries sustained. The Fort Wayne Fire Department was assisted by NHC,TRAA,AEP,NIPSCO, FWPD and the American Red Cross.

4100 Oliver St. House Fire

February 7, 2018 - Fort Wayne Fire Dept. responded to reported house fire in the 4100 block of Oliver St..  Upon arrival firefighters found two adults had already self evacuated before Fire Dept, arrival.  Firefighters found heavy smoke and fire coming from the living room of the home. Firefighters made an aggressive interior attack and had the fire under control in a short time.  While firefighters were extinguishing the fire another crew was doing a search and found a dog in the basement of the home removing it to the outside.  The dog was doing fine.  Heavy fire damage was reported to the living room with heavy smoke damage though out the structure along with moderate water damage.  No injuries were reported and this fire remains under investigation.  Assisting at the fire were NEC, TRAA, NIPSCO, AEP, FWPD,  Red Cross also assisted the family.

1100 Grant Ave. House Fire

January 19, 2018 - FWFD crews responded to a house fire in the 1100 block of Grant Ave. this afternoon to find heavy smoke coming from the windows and doors of a single story home that had been condemned.  After entering, firefighters conducted a search of the home for any occupants and extinguished a fire that was located on the first floor.  No persons or pets were found and no firefighters were injured. The cause is under investigation.  FWFD was assisted by AEP, TRAA, FWFPD, and NCE.

Cancer - A Firefighter's Real Risk

Multiple studies, including the recent NIOSH cancer study have repeatedly demonstrated cancer numbers are statistically higher for multiple types of cancers in firefighters compared to the general American population.

During this free seminar experts will discuss and identify risks associated with cancer in the fire service and standard methods of reducing risk during the course of duty.  We will also examine behavioral health issues within Emergency Services.

As a firefighter and cancer survivor, McDonnell will discuss the alarming statistics and status of cancer in the fire service industry - the most dangerous and unrecognized threat to the health and safety of our nation's firefighters.

Dr. Robert Smith - IFD Retired Lieutenant and Psychotherapist
Dr. Smith will examine behavioral health issues commonly identified in emergency services as well as the organizational culture shift recognizing the need for behavioral health programs.
