June 28, 2012 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to a possible structure fire at 611 Sturgis St. Upon arrival crews found heavy smoke and flames coming from both 611 Sturgis St. and 605 Sturgis St. addresses. Crews began an interior attack but were called out of the structure due to the deteriorating conditions. The fire was fought defensively. While fire did spread to a third house at 615 Sturgis St. firefighters were able to avoid further extension. It was determined occupants of all three homes were already self-evacuated or were not home at the time of the blaze.
Firefighters were rehabbed and rotated throughout the evening. TRAA crews were on hand to check the vitals of firefighters on scene. Several were treated for heat related issues and released.
Crews remained on the scene throughout the night to monitor and put out any hot spots. Early Friday morning, the house at 611 Sturgis was raised.
No further injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
